So- I don't have much history to go on, I've borrowed some DeWalt grinders here and there, felt various brands in the big box stores, and used one DeWalt to demo a 1950's style bathroom-tiled shower/tub. Still didn't know much. There's my history. That said- I use a LOT of different tools and know the meaning of quality. I know that heavier does not always mean better (case in point- going from my niCad Milwaukee drill to my Makita's. True that's a terrible comparison but I understand that technology does play a role in making things better (usually) for the future.Now, my history being said, and my OCD perfectionist track record, I think I know when a tool might work for me, work well, and last. This grinder- it will. Only had a couple chances so far to use it so I will update as time goes on with more uses, but at least for the two uses I've worked it with- it worked phenomenal.1. Had to create a double-ended bolt for connecting a finial and a curtain rod the other day and coupled with a 40 grit Diablo Grinding and Polishing Flap Disc TORE through the bolt head in seconds flat like a hot knife through butter. Very impressive when I made this second attempt at grinding the bolt, the first took 20 minutes on our bench grinder, definitely the wrong choice in hindsight.2. While repairing and prepping some 40-50 year old garage doors for some bondo, there were areas that had faced rot or other damage, indenting the wood deeply over the decades, covered in oil-based paint (already tested for lead, so we knew it was lead free through a radar test), and to prep the surface, the sanding job would have taken hours by hand and dozens of minutes with the corner of a power sander- something I didn't have since we had the bondo already mixed. Through on a crimped wire brush cup, and went to town- BLASTED through the paint and rotted wood down to bare, quality wood in a matter of seconds.Regarding the tool- yes, it is heavier than most 4.5-5" grinders, but it screams quality. Maybe except for the shield guard's paint job which had a couple minor chips from rattling around against the grinder when it arrived in shipping, but I have a friend who can get that powder coated so it wasn't a big deal for me. The action of the variable speed is great, the quick disconnect I am unsure about because you basically have to disengage it by pressing the spindle lock button before the tool is fully off, so the spin speed helps to loosen it, and that could be seen as a weak point of breakage for me. I won't be using the grinder for a daily job, however, since my repair jobs are varying almost on a guaranteed basis. And one last thing- going back to the shield, it's super easy for on and off and it is a positive locking collar on certain increments so it won't spin- a big deal for me, I learned from a rotozip I had with a simple clamp shield that no matter how tight, would spin.
